Nestled in 4 1/2 acres of pristine woods this log cabin overlooks its own private cove on Mitchell lake. Mitchell lake is conveniently located 4 miles south of Ely Minnesota and 3/4 of the lake is surrounded by the Superior National Forest allowing for privacy and breathtaking views. Our log cabin is a hand-scribed custom log homemade by the famous Bissonnet log cabin builders in 1990 and is truly a work of art. Large windows overlook the lake and the abundant woods surrounding the home, and you can often see deer, fox, eagles, and other critters. Bear have been seen in the area so be on the lookout! The cabin has four bedrooms with three bathrooms, one on each level.
The main floor features a kitchen, large great room, main bedroom, and bathroom. The kitchen has all of the basics you will need: dishes, glassware, flatware, pots & pans, toaster, instant pot, crockpot, and coffee maker. You will also find the cupboards and refrigerator stocked with some basics (salt & pepper, spices, sugar, oils, vinegars, ketchup, mustard, and some canned goods). The dining area has a table with 6 chairs and a small ‘craft’ table for 2. The great room has a large leather couch, leather chair, the famous ‘red chair’, a TV with Roku, and a Jotul wood-burning stove from Scandinavia. The red cabinet in the entryway is filled with games, puzzles, and more for your use. The main bedroom features a queen-size bed, dresser and nightstands, and a desk in case you need to work or need some space to journal. The newly refurbished main bathroom features a new tile shower and a large soaking tub.
Upon reaching the top of the stairs, you will find yourself in the loft library. This room has a large leather chair and ottoman, with a bookcase and desk. Feel free to read any of the books, but please leave them for the next visitors to enjoy. This is a great place for quiet reading or reflection and has incredible views of the lake from the upper large windows. The loft also contains a bedroom with a full size bed, nightstands, and an armoire to keep your things in. There is also a private bathroom which has also been renovated with a new tile shower. Tucked away in a corner of the loft bedroom is a door leading to a unique space called the “peace corner”. You will have to see it and decide whether the name fits.
The walkout has 2 bedrooms and a laundry room. The large bedroom filled with bunkbeds is known as our “bunkhouse”. The bunkhouse is perfect for kids, adults, and families, and sleeps up to 6! This room is great for the artistic – it has an art desk filled with some basic art supplies, a bulletin board (please put your finished art work on the board if you’re not taking it home with you, we love to see what you create) a whiteboard, and a TV equipped with video games. It also has a dresser and lights on every bunk for nighttime reading. The second bedroom is known as the “map” room as it has maps of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area as it looked in the 1800s up to the present. This bedroom has a king size bed, nightstands, an 1800s era dresser, a closet, and a desk for those who need to work and enjoy nature at the same time.
The cabin it is surrounded on three sides with a large deck. There is a large table with 8 chairs overlooking the lake, 2 Adirondack chairs overlooking the woods on the side deck along with a gas and charcoal weber grill available for outdoor cooking. Down by the lake shore cove is a natural rock fire pit surrounded by chairs. The wood shelter contains a full cord of firewood dried and ready for your evening enjoyment. As the fire crackles you may hear loons, or coyotes in the distance. In the summer we have two vintage canoes, two kayaks, a floating mat and a private dock. At the right time in the summer there are wild blueberries you may find in the woods along the path to the dock, and raspberries growing alongside the cabin. Feel free to use the detached 2 1/2 car garage, especially during the winter months to keep your car snow free.
In the unlikely event you leave the property you are literally only 3 miles from Ely once you leave the Haapala Road. In town you will find so many wonderful shops, stores, restaurants and of course the famous sites including The American Black Bear Center, The International Wolf Center and The Dorothy Molter Root Beer Center. It goes without saying that hiking trails in the summer and snow shoeing and cross country ski trails in the winter abound throughout the area.
This place is for those who love nature, appreciate the warmth of a log cabin and want the solitude to refresh, recharge and reconnect. Oh, and did we mention the nights when you look up and see billions upon billions of stars and realize how lucky we are to see and feel our place in the universe.
Enjoy!
